The American Staffordshire Terrier has triggered much debate about his origins. It is said that the American Staffordshire Terrier and the American Pit Bull Terrier are one in the same breed. The American Staffordshire Terrier is indeed the name of the show strain, while the fighting dog strain is labeled the American Pit Bull Terrier. These two dogs are recognized by different registries as different breeds, although they are considered the same breed. They are bred to have the same qualities and the same build. The American Staffordshire Terrier has retained an undeserving reputation for many years being that they are commonly used in the so-called "sport" of dog fighting. This breed however is very devoted, gentle, and loving. The American Staffordshire Terrier makes a wonderful companion for a dominant and experienced owner, and they make excellent guard dogs being that they are protective of their territory, family, and home. The American Staffordshire Terrier has a very even and stable temperament, which makes him a very reliable companion.
This breed does do well around small children, but should not be left unsupervised around them, as this is a very powerful and rambunctious breed. The American Staffordshire Terrier can get along exceptionally well with other dogs, however the fighting strain of dogs should never be placed in a home with another dog as they still retain that aggressiveness. Proper research is necessary to be sure of the temperament of the dog. The American Staffordshire Terrier does not require much grooming at all being very shorthaired. They shed very little, however depending on the climate they can become an average shedding breed. To remove dead or loose hairs, a rub down with a harsh and dry towel, or a specially made rubber glove would be sufficient. Dry shampooing is recommended as opposed to bathing, however an occasional bath is all right. The American Staffordshire Terrier is a very high energy and vivacious breed making training a little difficult. Being intelligent yet very willful and stubborn, this breed requires consistent and firm training from a dominant handler to prevent dominance issues that could arise.
Firm correction is a must as this is a very powerful and willful breed. Obedience classes at an early age are definitely recommended for someone experienced with the American Staffordshire Terrier breed. There are several accepted methods of house training your new American Staffordshire Terrier puppy. The American Staffordshire Terrier requires quite a bit of exercise being so energetic and lively. This breed does best with at least a medium sized yard and does not do well in apartment life as they have the tendency to become bored and can become very destructive at the expense of the owner. At least two hours of exercise per day is required for this extremely lively breed. Long walks and/or runs are recommended as well as free roam in a fenced area. Help reduce the number of American Staffordshire Terrier puppies in shelters by doing your due diligence. Many puppies are often purchased with little or no knowledge of what goes into parenting one. Uneducated decisions often leave the puppy in need of adoption and in the care of rescue groups.
Bringing home a puppy into your family has many benefits but we first implore you to educate yourself. An informed decision will take into account the characteristics of the breed, your lifestyle, expected veterinary care, the demands and limitations of owning one, their activity requirements and levels of companionship required. Anonymous asked: I am having a meet and greet tomorrow with a rescuer who needs a good home for a 1-1/2yr old male American Staffordshire Terrier.
I fell in love with him as soon as I saw him. My questions are regarding my daughters Chihuahua. The rescuer said that she has NO problems with him and her other dogs including the smaller ones. Is that generally true? Also, I have read that the Am Staff breed is very energetic, the rescurer said that this one is not. Could that just be his own personality? Every dog is different. That is the first thing you must keep in mind with you when it comes to meeting a new dog. The reason why there are standards for purebred dogs is so that a potential owner can access that information as to how the dog will most likely act as an adult. However, every dog has their own personality, which is groomed as the dog grows from puppyhood to adulthood. What you should do is take the Chihuahua with you and once the dog has met you and is comfortable with you, then allow the dog to meet the Chihuahua. All interactions between the dogs should be supervised at all times because of the size difference between the two dogs when/if you take the dog home.
As for energy, again, every dog is different just like people. Some are more energetic than others, same goes for dogs. But that does not mean he does not need exercise. The A.S.T needs about an hour to an hour and a half of exercise a day, so keep that in mind. It may be less if he is less active, but an hour at day is best. A tired dog is a good dog.Anonymous asked: Which breed is the most compatible for my female 3 year old American Staffordshire dog? The main thing you have to consider when wanting to bring a new dog into the family that already has a resident dog, is why? Once you understand why you want another dog, the next thing is to look at the resident dog and see if he/she even likes being around other dogs, or just tolerates other dogs. The American Staffordshire Terrier is a people oriented breed and is known for dog aggression if the dog is not socialized properly. You know your dog. You know what dogs she plays with at the dog park or with friends' dogs. Use the information you have by knowing your dog and go from there.
