Now she's thrown her support -- and her music -- behind the fight against breast cancer. McBride's "Pink Together Express'' chugged into Cleveland's Amtrak station Wednesday evening a couple of hours behind schedule but in plenty of time for breast cancer survivors like Paula Weaver of Lorain. On the one hand, the whistlestop tour through 11 cities to promote her new album, "Eleven,'' is a brilliant marketing move. But given McBride's track record with songs like "Concrete Angel,'' which spoke out against child abuse, and "Independence Day,'' which focused on domestic violence, the sapphire-eyed singer's tour is perfectly in character.Certainly that was the feeling for Weaver and her "support group,'' friend Kathy Schrader of Lorain. Or for Lynn Day of Brunswick, whose mother, Marie Lessner is an 11-year-survivor, and whose sister, Trish Ricci, now is fighting the disease. That's why they -- and Day's 15-year-old daughter, Kristen -- arrived at the station by 4 p.m., 90 minutes ahead of McBride's scheduled arrival time and nearly three hours before her chartered train with three locomotives, four pink-draped passenger cars adorned with huge images of McBride's face and a couple of other passenger cars even pulled into the station.
"This went from being a tour to promote the album to being a tour that can make a difference,'' McBride told the hundred or so fans who crowded into Cleveland's aged and -- honestly, somewhat dingey -- rail station. The train pulled out of Los Angeles at 7 a.m. local time Monday, and will wend its way to New York City, where she will become the first artist to perform a concert on the 80th floor of the Big Apple landmark, which will be awash in a flood of pink lights. The current single on McBride's new album, the 11th of her career and the first for new label Big Machine, is called "I'm Gonna Love You Through It.'' It's a heartrending tale, told much too often, of a woman whose worst fears are answered in "that call'' from her doctor. But it's not a song of surrender, but one of defiance and love. The title comes from what the woman's husband tells her upon hearing the news.Amtrak chief marketing officer David Lim, who is traveling with the singer, expressed awe at the fervor of McBride's following.
