Looking for a toy size...Georgia Moody sat without expression inside a Natrona County Circuit courtroom as a judge read out the names of the dogs she neglected.Gus, Lexi and Dakota are Siberian huskies that were rescued in February by Casper police officers. The animals were among 12 dogs that were sick, malnourished and covered in feces when they were discovered in crates in a U-Haul trailer.A jury Wednesday found Moody, the dogs’ owner, guilty of 13 counts of animal cruelty.Moody is forbidden from ever owning animals again, Natrona County Circuit Judge Michael Huber ruled after the jury issued its verdict.“You have been incapable, in any manner, of taking care of animals like these,” Huber told Moody.
“I seriously question whether you’re in contact with the reality of what happened here.” Huber also ordered that Moody forfeit to the county the 11 Siberian huskies that police confiscated from her. She'll also have to give up a cat found in her vehicle. The 12th dog, a puppy, was euthanized by police when officers responded to the scene. They believed the dog, which was unable to move, had a broken neck.Moody had been jailed since her Feb. 13 arrest. Huber did not order additional time behind bars.*** Police discovered the animals in a U-Haul trailer in a Fitness One parking lot in Casper. The dogs were kept inside stacked crates. The animals were covered in urine and feces.Prosecutor Alan Dees said Wednesday that Moody had testified that she let all the dogs out of the trailer earlier that day and had cleaned out their crates that morning.“She said she was doing the best she could,” Dees said. “But this didn’t happen in one day.” Moody also told the jury that she fed the dogs twice a day, the prosecutor said.
But, a veterinarian at Altitude Veterinary Hospital testified that she examined all the dogs and they were severely underweight. Many of the dogs had parasites and gastrointestinal issues, were anemic and had canine parvovirus, which is spread from dog to dog by contact with their feces, the vet testified. In the veterinarian’s professional opinion, the dogs were suffering from neglect, the prosecutor said.“These dogs were not being provided for,” Dees said.Moody’s counsel, Jared Holbrook, told the jury his client was homeless and had been looking for a place to live. She was doing the best she could, he said.“She provided them with what she could, when she could,” Holbrook said. “Which was a lot for her situation.” Officers searched Moody's trailer after a worker at Fitness One called to say he believed there was a dog inside a trailer in the parking lot, according to her arrest report. The trailer was attached to a Jeep Cherokee. Police found a cat in the Jeep, but did not see any water or food for the animal.
Police detected “an overwhelming smell of rotting or decaying flesh” from the U-Haul, the report states.Officers opened the back door of the trailer. There were 12 dogs inside four crates, stacked on top of one another. All of the dogs appeared to be weak and malnourished.“The dogs were whimpering and whining, wanting to get out of those crates,” Dees told the jury.Dees said officers began taking the crates out of the trailers, with the dogs inside of them. Urine and feces were “sloshing around” in the bottom of the cages and spilled onto the officers as they moved them, he said. The crates had rabbit bottles in them to provide water to the dogs, Dees said. However, the bottles were empty. The first responding officer, Richie Randel, euthanized the puppy officials believed had a broken neck.“I surmised that the animal was gravely injured and was not going to survive its injuries,” Randel said after the jury’s verdict was issued. “I took the animal out behind the business and put it down.
I did the hard thing, but I did the right thing.” Randel said the case “shocked his conscience.” “It was disgusting,” he said. “” *** The cat and the 11 huskies were taken to Metro Animal Control, where they remain. Metro officials say the animals will become available for adoption and that more information will be forthcoming.Tory Cutrell, manager at Metro, said the dogs smelled putrid when they arrived.“They were filthy,” she said. ” The smell stayed with the dogs even after several baths, and their legs were stained yellow for a couple of months. But the dogs’ fur recently started to appear white, Cutrell said. They reached healthy weights. One dog, Dakota, even had puppies. The puppies will become adoptable with the rest of the dogs. The dogs’ names did not come from Moody, who didn’t call any of them by name when she was on the stand, Dees said.Instead, the dogs received their names at the pound.“Their little personalities started coming out and staff started naming them,” Cutrell said.
