Well, after a couple of shows at new locations, it was quite nice to return to one we’ve been to many times before. The weather held off pretty much on the Sunday, despite the rest of the country getting wet, and Monday was just glorious.Well, strangely enough it was meeting this little fella (pictured right). He’s a kookaburra called Kookie and although I am not usually that into the birds, I really fell for him. He sat on my hand for a while and we had a chat – he sounds wonderful when he gets going – and I really didn’t want to give him back to his owners at ‘First Class FalconryI’ve been looking forward to photographing the knights too for a while, and they didn’t disappoint in terms of amazing acrobatics on a galloping horse! In the morning we saw the blue knight, yellow knight and red knight compete in a series of fast moving medieval type tournaments of bravery, horsemanship and speed… But they were disrupted most rudely by the evil Black Knight – Bert – and in the afternoon he had to be sorted out in a jousting tournament.
All good fun and good entertainmentThe usuals were back in the main arena too: ponies beat the Isuzu in the Machine Vs Beast Challenge (again); scurry drivers were out in force; ferrets were racing to large crowds and big applause (Treacle won); and the fishing and Chase the Bunny demos both had plenty of volunteers.Over in the Dog Zone, we were pleased to welcome a pack of sealyham terriers for their first show. A little known breed, these were lovely friendly working dogs, with handlers who knew the breed well and were more than happy to discuss them with the many people who stopped to say hello. We had more lesser known breeds in the breed tent too, coming out at regular intervals to parade in the gun dog arena while their handlers explained something about the breed and the work they do. I especially loved this little toller pup (right) – but how could you not?!The gun dog scurries were busy all day, and the gun dog clinic was also very well attended. Paul Makepeace with Aubrey Ladyman did some outstanding demonstrations in the Countryside Arena, showing how to train a gun dog well, and even how to work a dog with a bird.
